“Syd was bought as a four year old from Germany by Clayton and has shown the potential to be a star in the making” Alice Page told us.
His name derives from Alice’s Great (x Many) Grandmother (b 1777) who was a convict sent to Australia as a 13 year- old for stealing a horse when dressed as a boy, and then went on to be the First Lady in Trade out there. Her business was in the ‘Rocks’ area of Sydney thus his name. The MR are her initials, as her name was Mary Reiby and she can still be found on the back of the 20 AUS Dollar note.
As a 5 year old, Syd won his first Novice and was 8th in the Burghley Young Event Horse finals which was impressive considering he is German and not British bred. His events as a six year old included being 2nd in the CIC* and 3rd in the CCI* in Barocca, Portugal at the start of the season and winning an Intermediate Novice and Open Novice later in the year as well as finishing the season by being 4th at the Le Lion D’Angers 6 year old championships. He is a true performer and this year he will be starting the season by competing at the Fontainebleau CIC1* event.
